1) Emergency Preparedness
Emergency Preparedness week is May 5-11, 2019.
First Aid (2-4444) vs Medical Emergency (911)
The information below is provided to ensure there is clarity on when to call 2-4444 vs 911 at UBC Point Grey Campus (UBC-PGC)
For first aid treatment,
- Staff, faculty and paid students shall call 604-822-4444 to summon an Occupational First Aid (OFA) level 2 or 3 attendant and meet the attendant at the nearest first aid room if possible, or have an attendant attend at your location.
- Unpaid students shall call 911 or attend Student Health at the UBC Hospital.
- Visitors, call 911. To ensure the prompt and accurate dispatch of first aid attendants, please provide the dispatcher with the nature of the injury, employee's exact location, and any other relevant information that is requested.
In the event of a medical emergency or serious injury,
- Staff and faculty and paid students must immediately call 911. The dispatch of critical Emergency Medical Services (EMS) should takeplace as soon as possible. At UBC-PGC, 604-822-4444 must be initiated immediately (or simultaneously if you have assistance) following the 911call. If first onsite, the UBC-PGC first aid attendant will be able to provide preliminary first aid measures until EMS arrives. If you are unsure if the incident is a medical emergency err on the side of caution and call 911 followed by 604-822-4444.
- Unpaid students and visitors must immediately call 911
2) Safety Day Award Criteria
A memo has been attached to this email that outlines the award criteria for the JOHSCs and LSTs. Please review so you are aware of the criteria that will be utilized to determine the winners. A survey link will be distributed in a future co-chair email where all JOHSCs and LSTs will have an opportunity to self-nominate themselves and provide reasons as to why they are qualified for the specific award. As a reminder, Safety Day will be held on Tuesday October 1, 2019 at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre.

3) Reach out campaign
The Reach Out Campaign is a year-long awareness campaign which focuses on
three key messages:
- Our campus community cares (learn how to help a friend, student or colleague who may be in crisis)
- Help is available (key crisis response resources)
- Reach out (help yourself, help others)
The goal is to engage the campus community in helping to build a safer and healthier campus community by raising awareness about key mental health resources, including resources available for students, staff and faculty in crisis.
To this end, you can support the campaign by requesting pens to distribute amongst your colleagues. The pens have a pull-out banner which provides key information and resources to assist someone who needs help or who would like to assist someone who needs help. If you are open to having the pens, they can be delivered to your area. Please email wellness.centre@ubc.ca<mailto:wellness.centre@ubc.ca> to request them.
