RDM: Research Data Management with UBC Researchers

Announcement
When
September 29, 2021 10:00 am
Where
Online
Presenter(s)
Barb Marcolin, Muhammad Abdul-Mageed and Libby Natola
Host(s)
Moderator: Nick Rochlin, UBC Advanced Research Computing

As a way to illustrate Research Data Management (RDM) in practice, this session will feature UBC researchers discussing their experiences with data management, with a focus on unforeseen events that lead to a disruption, near disruption, or horror story in their research. The session will be led by a moderator to facilitate a panel discussion in which UBC researchers will answer questions relating to data and RDM, and we encourage you to bring your own questions for the panel!

Barb Marcolin is an Associate Professor, Faculty of Management, University of British Columbia. Barb returned to academics July 2012 after working 8 years in IT research for high-tech entrepreneurial company Saint John, New Brunswick, as Research Director and Privacy Officer managing technology research and IP/patents. She taught systems perspectives for 17 years at University of Calgary, Alberta, and the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University, Ontario. Dr. Marcolin's research interests now focus on entrepreneurial technology that captures individual level use and technology value for non-profits, communities and businesses. She holds two SSHRC research grants advancing food banks and health systems for effective communities.

Muhammad Abdul-Mageed is Assistant Professor of Computational Linguistics, Information Science (joint appointment), and Computer Science (courtesy) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is a founding member of UBC's Center for Artificial Intelligence, CAIDA. His research focuses on deep representation learning and natural language socio-pragmatics. His work aims at: (1) development of ‘social’ machines for improved human health, safer social networking, and reduced information overload; and (2) use of machine learning as a vehicle for making discoveries with and about human language. He currently leads 6 different grants, funded by NSERC, SSHRC, and CFI. He is passionate about working with UBC ARC to transform the computing landscape suited for cutting-edge digital research.

Libby Natola is a Zoology PhD candidate at the Irwin lab, who uses genomic, behavioral, and habitat data to understand the processes by which new species arise.

This panel is part of the RDM Fall Series 2021
