Data4Nature Workshop: How to get data into and out of species databases
Time: 1:30 to 4:30 pm

Instructors:
Emily Black, PhD student, UBC Department of Zoology
Katie Marshall, Associate Professor, UBC Department of Zoology

Summary: in this hands-on workshop, we will explore the ins and outs of species databases such as GBIF, iNaturalist, FishBase, and the IUCN Red List. We will begin by learning what types of data are found in species databases, where they come from, and how you can contribute your own observations. We will then discuss how these data can be used across a variety of research topics, along with best practices for downloading, cleaning, and publishing using these data. Finally, we will work through an interactive demonstration using GBIF data where you will learn how to download and clean occurrence records of a species of your choice to map their distribution across space. This workshop is open to participants of all experience levels but focuses on introducing species databases to those with limited prior experience.
